I know why the caged bird sings

First day of the year - first painting of the year - has to be something special. So, I decided to work on a portrait - after many days. And who else than Maya Angelou could come through my charcoal sets?

Dear Maya, wherever you are, I want you to know that countless number of sleepless nights - I have clutched my pillow - tear drops rolling down uncontrollably and I kept humming your poems - like chanting mantras - and I survived.

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Technically, its charcoal pencils of paper and little use of paper stamps to make odd rough edges smooth.

And , and - to my credit - last calendar year - I stroked 100 posts - it had some weird assortment of different variety of art and crafts, but my target was 40. <feeling very cool>
